Q&A: How much Tumeric should a cancer patient take?

Question by thousandfootk: How much Tumeric should a cancer patient take?
hello, I’ve been reading a lot about Tumeric and that it can help stop the growth of cancer cells and tumors. My brother was diagnosed with lesions of cancer in his lungs, as well as a reoccurence of a tumor in his right hip. I bought these tumeric tablets for him at the whole food store that were like 34 dollars. And I also have been feeding him a LOT of veggies such as brocolli, spiniach, greenbeens, etc. I’m trying to help build up his immune system.

I also have been giving him different sort of Antioxident teas such as green teas and this other one that helps build the immune system (I cant remember).

However, on the bottle it says to take 3 tablets a day with food or water. But I figure that since he is obviously missing the nutrients that he needs from his body (because of the cancer cells that are in his lungs and hips), he probably needs more???

I don’t really know who to ask about this… and I’ve searched google and cant really find any anwers. The tablets are around 450 mg Tumeric Extract. and 50 mg Tumeric Root.

So that makes it at 1350 mg of Tuemric Extract a day if he drinks 3 tablets??

What do you guys recommend? In a few day’s he’ll begin to take other supplements that I’ve bought Online for him that I am basing off the book “Cancer Free.”

I recommend you ask a doctor and/or nutritionist who is professionally formed in this sort of thing instead of the internet, which is full of poor information.

Health issues shouldn’t even be an option on this site it’s ludicrous….

Dont go to your doctor or oncologist asking him if you should give your brother herbal supplements. He will say no – not because they might not work, but because these doctors make a fortune cooperating with pharmaceutical companies, so they will tell you that herbal medicine is all nonsense and that you should only have him undergo treatments they propose – lots of chemicals supplied quite expensively by pharmaceutical companies. Of course your brother should continue to seek treatment by a physician, but don t count on them to advice you on alternative medicine. They wont cause it is not profitable. The way I leanred, and i am in your boat

    1) lots of wisdom and healing power comes from plants. and

    2) the supplements you buy at whole foods do help in strengthening the immune system, which is crucial for someone battling cancer. Chemo weakens your body but you need a strong body to fight off the cancer because inability to fight cancer is often related to the body’s inability to repair itself (repair cell damage, DNA damage).

Dont listen to people who discourage you from giving him herbal supplements before discussing with the doctor. There is nothing in them that would interfere with the cancer treatment which consists of pumping the body full of chemicals. I would keep giving him the supplements and continue have him eat a very healthy, predominantly plant and grain based diet. And forget about your money-driven physician who will tell you that alternative medicine is nonsense and not backed up by studies blah blah blah. It isnt true and you have to understand that one of the reasons it is often discredited is because there is more money in making meds and asking tons of money for them. NIH will rarely fund research on alternative medicine, but they will fund research that is aimed at developing a drug – because of the profitability motive. As you noticed, our government is strongly tied to industry – they got each others’ back and no one in their right mind in the FDA or NIH – if they want to keep their job – will tell you that alternative medicine is good and the FDA wont put their approval stamp on it. Ironically, it is all these chemicals and medication they prescribe ot everyone so carelessly that is the leading cause of all these illnesses – -including and especially cancer.

By the way, i was reading about raw cinnamon. Have him eat a tea spoon full of raw cinnamon with one glass of water. I also read about Turmeric and there are some studies describing its powerful antioxidant abilities. All the best for him and blessings.

PLEASE LOOK INTO WHEAT GRASS IT HELPS TO FIGHT CANCER CELLS. THEY HAVE IT VITAMIN FORM, REGULAR WHEAT GRASS THAT YOU CAN JUICE AND THE HEALTH FOOD STORES WILL JUICE IT FOR YOU AND ADD IT INTO YOUR SMOOTHIE. ALSO ASPARAGUS IS GOOD FOR CANCER YOU CAN JUICE THAT ALSO. I’VE BEEN READING THAT VITAMIN C HELPS FIGHT ALOT OF DISEASES BUT THE DOSE IS 20,000 cc BUT I’VE HEARD NOTHING BUT GOODS THINGS ABOUT THIS. SO PLEASE RESEARCH IT FIRST. BUT I TAKE WHEAT GRASS PILLS DAILY. SPIRLIENA (probably spelled wrong) THAT YOU CAN GET IT FROM THE HEALTH FOOD STORE ALSO BUILDS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM. SO MUCH SO THAT THE DOCTORS TOLD ME TO STOP TAKING IT DUE TO A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT THAT I HAD AND MY IMMUNE SYSTEM NEEDS TO STAY LOW SO THAT IT WILL NOT FIGHT OF THE ORGAN.

What makes you believe he is missing the nutrients that he needs because of the cancer cells that are in his lungs and hips? That just doesn’t make sense.
Your brother should not be taking a thing without discussing it with his oncologist. You may be causing more harm than good by giving things to interact with his treatment.
Contrary to another answer you received oncologists do not make a fortune on chemo they are luck to break even overall.

Interesting question. “Curcumin” is the active ingredient in turmeric that is believed to have anti-inflamitory and anti-angiogenic properties. Run a search on PubMed on curcumin and your brother’s type of cancer and see what you can find. Most studies are tested on animals so the bioavailability and effect on humans in unclear.

Your oncologist may well warn your brother about taking concentrated supplements because the effect of mixing them with any medication that he may be taking currently is again, untested and unknown. Some supplements can cause liver damage.

There are insufficient human trials because no responsible doctor would deny drugs proven to be effective and run a lengthy trial on foods with antiangiogenic properties to test the effect on tumor growth. Currently tens of thousands of chicken embryos are sacrificed to prove these antiangiogenic properties, but it is a great leap to test the effect on human subjects.

At this point I suppose I should confess to mixing 2g of tumeric per day with whatever dips are in the fridge and eating that while my green tea cools. Good luck to your brother.

Firstly, is he having conventional treatment as well?

If so, then you need to discuss any supplements with his treating oncologist as they may interact with the medications the oncologist has prescribed.

If not, then I have no idea as I don’t trust the anecdotal evidence published by anyone who sets up a website on the internet. I only used treatment based on scientific evidence.
